Intro
The Moon doesn't just go around and around us. It goes north to south across us and then back up again, and around, and WE go around under IT. Where the Moon north starts going south towards the equator, cyclones are generally absent in both hemispheres. In our case the New Moon WAS over the northern hem. on June 3rd, and on the 10th crossed the equator, which is why we didn't see any before the 10th. Around the time the Moon crosses the equator is the time thunderstorms occur.

Weather: coming
At this time in the month we get get fast-moving weather systems, changeable, because the angular distance the Moon is travelling is faster than at other times in the month. Until about 17th, next Sunday, give or take a day, that's our lot. The Moon turns the corner at its south point on the 17th and we should get nice clear weather again for the week after that, up to 24th - still cold though.

Caesar didn't just walk in when he conquered Britain. The bloody campaign started in 55BC and took 10 years, stuff we don't read about in school of course, because the Romans are supposed to have been the goodies. The old British system of measurement derived from the ancient science of the Celts/Britons, that was cast aside and satanized as pagan, unnecessary and evil, after 43AD. But those ancient 'backward' British had the maths of the stars so tuned, they designed (and it lasted 5,000 years) a unit system to describe it. Imagine a circle drawn inside a square. Now imagine that circle is the Sun. That square would measure 3,168,000 miles. If the circle was the earth it would be 3,168,000 miles. And the Moon, 3,168 megalithic (ancient) miles. Our total atmosphere measures 60 feet up, or 316,800 feet. There are 9 planets in the Solar System. According to Encyclopaedia Britannica the sum of the mean distances from the Sun to each of the planets (dropping the zeroes) is 9954. Think of this number as the circumference of a gigantic circle, representing our ENTIRE SOLAR SYSTEM. Divide by pi and we find the diameter to be 3,168. When I tell this maths to schoolchildren a nice light comes into their eyes.

I've just been watching a The Planets rerun, the episode that talks of the signals serious scientists are sending out to find life out there. Interesting to see top astronomers quibbling over what we should say when They reply, who should be our spokesman between us and Them, and whether or the rest of us should be allowed to put in a message too. They've assumed there is life out there, they can speak English and they want to speak to us.

Q's and A's
Q: Was the Moon used in navigation centuries ago? If so, how?
(John Petit, Hamilton)
A: On his first voyage to the Pacific, Cook determined longitude by lunar distance. During a 24 hour period, the Moon moves anticlockwise about 13deg with respect to the stars, 22 of its own diameters. Its motion past a chosen star every 28 days can be seen and easily measured. It was a common method for several centuries.

Q: Why does the barometer generally stay the same over a day and night, even though the atmosphere (according to you) undergoes two tides per day?
(Ron Wills, Jacksonville)

A: When the Moon is in the sky gravitation takes over and the atmosphere is stretched, taking the atmosphere to a high tide. We always have a high tide the Moon's up. Taking air from wherever, the atmosphere would have to be stretched (moleclues pulled out a bit more) to keep the barometric pressures the same as it would be if there was no Moon in the sky. During a Full Moon (night moon) the baro pressures would be the same at night as they during the day. Particularly if there is an anticyclone around. At Full Moon night, there's more air above the earth, but more OF it to keep the pressures the same. To get that effect the Moon must gravitationally hold the atmosphere up, which means it must thin it out. During a low atmospheric tide, when the Moon is not above the horizon, the air is more compact lower down. When you get higher and the temperature drops down, the air get heavier and cold air falls, I suppose therefore creating what pilots would interpret as aviation instability. Clouds descend lower in a low air-tide, remain higher in a high tide. You only get real cumulus cloud when there is no Moon up.
