Good to be back

Hi folks! I have been away, so if you have missed this ezine - GOOD! Tee hee. In the UK for 6 weeks I was guest in Glastonbury where they launched my books Predicting The Weather By The Moon and the Weather Almanac 2001. I gave a public talk about moon stuff and was very well received. Bristol Radio interviewed me and they had a meteorologist along to rebuff me, but he was a damp squid as he kept saying 'I agree' to everything I said. My hosts in Glastonbury were Frances and Jamie, who run the GothicImage Publications, publishers of my books in the UK. They have a dog called Oscar who knows all about the weather; he goes and gets a Frisbee just when the weather is going to clear!
Back in NZ I went down to Christchurch for the NZ launch of the books, compered by Jim Hopkins, sponsored by Montana Wines, and covered by Holmes(TV1), PrimeTV and CHTV. Quite a media event. I am very grateful to all the organization Hazard Press went to. They are a small but quality publisher, and in this country it is hard for these independent companies to earn a living, as big chains like Whitcoulls buy huge remainder stocks of books from the USA at ridiculously low bulk prices, making competition amongst the independents and the big boys tough.
I do apologise being away from this columns, but hope to issue this as regularly as I can over the summer months, and trust it will be helpful to some.

Gusty winds

The Full Moon was last night, and the perigee (moon closest to earth for December)was today. It was the 5th closest perigee for the year, so fairly influential as regards whipping up winds. My hat blew off on Sunday at the Tamaki Yacht Club, if that's any indication. Also, I noticed the newspaper reports of that giant trimaran that lost its hull due to heavy winds and seas in the Atlantic somewhere. The moon turned at its northerly declination today also, meaning that from now it will be dragging warmer winds from the equatorial regions down this way. These three factors account for the bad weather just experienced.

Weather forÝ Xmas

Here's my prediction. I sent this out two weeks ago as a news release to all major TV stations and radio networks and newspapers. Not one has thus far made any mention of it. You'd think it was at least mildly interesting(g)
PreChristmas: about 3 days of unsettled weather for most districts
Christmas Day: fine everywhere
Boxing Day: fine for the next 3 days.
New Years Eve: widespread rain, but not too much wind.
New years Day: clearing in most areas.
As usual, please bear in mind that a day's error is allowed. After all, I am getting these readings from what the weather was some 31 years ago. There are many cycles I at times use, and I average them out.

Biggest ozone hole ever?

Nah. More like biggest scare story ever. The ozone hole always disappears in our summer, because the sun starts shining back on the South Pole skies. As the hole is only formed when it is dark during the polar winter, this makes perfect sense. So there is no danger of burning from the ozone 'hole'. Firstly, it's not there. Secondly, the sun cannot shine through the south pole skies onto us because the sun is always north of NZ, never south of it. I have yet to see the sun scoot underneath the earth. What headlines that would make. Ozone replenishes itself every day, wherever sunlight meets rising air. Think about this - who is making money out of the ozone scare? The medical industry, the sunblock creams industry, the research funds industry, the newspaper industry and the news channel ratings industry. Just have a look at last week's issue of the Listener to see how this nonsense sells magazines.

Letters from Top meteorologist

Bob McDavitt, NZ's weather ambassador, has been writing me EXTENSIVE emails recently, inquiring about this and that. I think he was priming me for information pre Holmes programme, because of late I haven't heard from him. On Holmes he spent his slot being critical and then followed it all up by saying he had difficulty understanding the theory.

Jim Salinger on rotten summer coming

On Thursday, Jim Salinger of NIWA will be speaking on global warming at the ARC building, 21 Pitt St at 3.30pm. He says Christmas beach picnics will be rained out and early summer weather is likely to be unsettled. Well now, that's a bit loose. Early summer weather is always unsettled because that's what we call The Spring. I notice he'll be reporting on La Nina. There's aÝ red herring for you. NIWA claimed last autumn that 'La Nina is in its final stages, and it is benign.."(Climate summary 12th June 2000). Augy said last night that La Nina is the "strongest now for over 70 years") Once again, can't they agree? I don't think any of them know what La Nina means. Augy pointed to an 'L 'on the weather map the other day and proudly exclaimed "Here comes the La Nina now". Someone should whisper gently in his ear that L stands for 'low'

95bFM

After being on Hauraki, NewstalkZB, MoreFM and many other radio stations of late, today I was interviewed by Mikey Havoc at 95bFM. This looks like being a regular Tuesday morning spot, so next week have a listen(8:15am). Thanks, 95bFM, for taking an interest.
