Today's weather report as told on Radio 95bFM

The Moon's been coming down from the north, dragging warm winds down from the equatorial regions, and it crosses the equator today, which is a significant event because it's moving a little faster and crossing the earth's magnetic force field lines just like a dynamo does when a magnet gets crossed by a circular wire. This is a time of more potential electrical activity in some parts of the world. Here it'll just register as the odd cloudburst tomorrow, maybe around Taranaki and Westport.
There's also the potential for a slight earthquake around Wellington. We're going to get the weather deteriorating now around 21st in many parts of the country - the main effects will occur around Thursday and it'll peter out slowly leading up to Xmas day. It will take longer to leave the South island whereas Auckland will get light showers after Thursday.
It'll be a New Moon on Xmas day, which means the moon will be in the sky all day although you won't see it, against the glare of the sun. But the moon in the sky offers us some protection against the heat of the sun and the cold of space. It's generally fine on the day of the New Moon, but the night will see rain if rain's around (which will be scarce in NZ so it'll just get cooler than normal). If you're having a barbecue on Xmas day afternoon, take a sweater because it could get quite cool in the evening.

Next weekend's weather (23rd/24thÝ December)

The Moon will be approaching its southern monthly point and it will be 2 days before new Moon. Not the best. I'd say cloud and scattered showers except for Tauranga, Rotorua, Taupo and Hawkes Bay, which should stay fine.Ý

Weather forÝ Xmas

PreChristmas: 3 days of unsettled weather for most districts
Christmas Day: fine everywhere
Boxing Day: fine for the next 3 days.

New Years Day: clearing in most areas.
(Possible error of +/-24hrs.)

Gisborne bad news

One doesn't like to scare and predict gloom and doom, but Gisborne does look set to have virtually no significant rain right until April.

Jim Salinger on rotten summer coming

Last Thursday, Dr Jim Salinger of NIWA spoke at a public meeting warning once again about global warming. I was there and noticed four uniformed police there as well. What were they expecting? Jim and one of his colleagues said La Nina is an on-again-off-again event. It WAS here, left and is now returned. No-one knows why, and no one knows what's coming next. In question time I ventured that if they were so confused about the coming climate, how come they were so sure about global warming? He replied that that's what he did his phD in and so he was. On reflection I suppose a stupid question deserved an equally dumb answer.

Sydney-Hobart race

Well, the organizers got it right this time. Last time it was held on the lunar perigee and we all know what a tragedy that was. This time it is being held on a far more moon-friendly date. The 26th December will be just after the new Moon(the best time of the month up until 1st quarter), on a southerly declination (slow-moving weather systems), and on the apogee(no gales or big swells). So there could be some very light winds at the start of the race, almost becalming conditions. Anyone reading this who is taking part and who wants a good tip from me should pack on board light-wind sails.

One day free forecast

I suspended this service just before I went overseas, but I am willing to reinstate it, but for the benefit of ezine members only. If there is a date far into the distance that you require weather information about, please email me and I shall do what I can. I need your name, email, day/month/year and name of nearest big town.

Hi Ken
Read your latest e-zine on this evening - amazing how similar our weather is/has been over here! Today I walked about 6 miles there & back to the dentist ..in very gusty winds & rain; fighting the winds with my brolly.
June Izbicki(London, UK)
(June, the perigee - moon closest for month - of the Moon affects all of the earth as the earth rotates under the moon in 24 hours. However the northern hemisphere is perigee-affected the most at the moment, as the perigee cycle is 8.86 years, meaning for 4 years it occurs in the northern hemisphere closer to you, and soon it will be closer to us down here for 4 years(after March 2003). You have been having the same weather France had last December 22nd, when there was a similar, though not quite as close perigee -K.)

Sir, Would you please keep me updated with your weather predictions, as a farmer I have found them to be far more accurate than those of "So called Weather experts" on the TV.
Cheers
Russell

Hi I read your articles posted on your web site & generally found them interesting & made sense. I'm not sure about whether or not there is global warming - too many conflicting claims. I note that just a few days ago some Aust. University said there was no rise in sea levels at all!
David
(No, a study commissioned earlier this year by the late PM of Tuvalu, carried out by Sydney University, has found that sealevels have been decreasing around the atolls. This report did not make the newspapers, nor will they, as the media seeks to present only one side of the story. -K.)

Ken,
Thanks for the most interesting website I've ever keyed into. As much a cynic as a sceptic , the one common thread that held my attention was that totally lost / overlooked asset not particularly related to intellect that shone through - common sense. It hasn't been taught in schools for 20 years and we now have MP's on protest marches against the siting of a cellphoneÝ repeater which I am advised by a telecommunications engineer will have the equivalent gamma radiation level of the LED display on an alarm clock around 5 meters from your head, promoting the legalisation of a highly carcogenic 'natural' plant. I will be keenly watching your site!
Thank you
Brendan Barry-Walsh
